samenvatting: The Sexual Rights Initiative (SRI) and the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) have developed this toolkit to help you shine an international spotlight on human rights violations related to sexual and reproductive health and rights in your country through the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process of the United Nations (UN). The UPR is a relatively new and unique process of the UN Human Rights Council where each of the 193 Member States of the UN is reviewed on its entire human rights record every four and a half years. It can be a very powerful tool to bring about real change in your country and support the work you are already doing at the national or local level. About this toolkit Human Rights Council, Geneva. The UPR is essentially a national process with specific moments which occur in Geneva, Switzerland at the UN Human Rights Council. There are several opportunities to participate in the UPR and you do not need to be involved in all of its stages for your advocacy to be successful. This toolkit will provide you with practical information on the UPR, how to participate and why it can be important for your sexual rights advocacy. You will also find helpful tips to maximize your advocacy throughout the process from sexual rights advocates who are already participating in the UPR. In addition, this toolkit will help you navigate your country's UPR cycle so that you can decide how and when to engage.

samenvatting: A research report by and for lesbian, bisexual, transgender men, trans-masculine and gender nonconforming people from grassroots and poor urban, rural and maritime areas in Fiji. Developed and implemented by a local grassroots LBT activist research community over 4 years in Fiji, dealing with violence, families, health, wellbeing, poverty, education, employment and economic justice, force, court system, religious impacts and faith, resistance, joy and liberation strategies and access to justice. This feminist action-based research fills some data and analysis gaps to move forward evidence based policy reform and development in Fiji and to build a Pacific that is inclusive of, and responsive to LBT women and GNC people in Fiji. The report identifies a few key recommendations to State and non-state actors, and will assist in identification of immediate and medium term strategies by local Hubs of LBT women around Fiji. It will guide the work of DIVA for Equality, LBT and LGBTQI led groups, the Government of Fiji, UN agencies, development institutions, and other stakeholders in Pacific and other small island states.

Researching the situation of lesbian, gay and bisexual persons (LGB) in countries of origin.

samenvatting: Over the past few decades, it appears that attitudes toward LGB have significantly changed in many parts of the world. LGB have advocated and have obtained recognition of their human rights, such as the right to non-discrimination and the right to private and family life. This development, however, has not been universal, as some countries have faced a rise in homophobia and others have failed to decriminalise or have further criminalised homosexuality. In some ways the gap between these countries appears to have widened in recent years. It is in this context that some LGB flee their countries of origin and ask for international protection. While sharing many methodological similarities with other types of COI (country of origin) research, reporting on the situation of LGB in countries of origin can become a difficult task for several reasons (variety of search terms, scarce sources, general information...). Becoming acquainted with terminology, local contexts and types of sources, understanding relevant research questions and search terms and obtaining alternative sources of information can better equip a researcher confronted with the difficulties of this topic. This guide aims to provide background knowledge as well as useful tips and sources for researching the situation of LGB in countries of origin. The guide focuses on researching the situation of LGB since transgender and intersex applicants for international protection are not so common. The guide should serve the needs of both experienced and inexperienced COI researchers, as well as caseworkers conducting COI research. Additionally, it may assist lawyers, legal aid providers and judges working in the asylum process.

samenvatting: This paper highlights the unique discriminations and exclusions lesbians, bisexual women, transgender and intersex persons (LBTI) face as well as the challenging issue that gender and sexual diversity remains. The Report is based on the proceedings of the 2016 Regional Consultation on Promoting and Protecting the Rights of Lesbians, Bisexual women, transgender and intersex Persons jointly convened by UN Women Regional office for Asia and Pacific in partnership with Outright Action international and in collaboration with UNDP and UNAIDS, through the Canada-funded Regional Programme on Improving women's rights in South East Asia. Despite changes in national legislations and policies, such as the abolition of a ban on same-sex marriages in Viet Nam, the recognition of a third gender within official identity documents in Nepal, or the inclusion of the LBT women in Cambodia?s National Plan of Action to Prevent Violence Against Women 2014-2018, fear and anxiety against LBTI remain. They are often discriminated and excluded from their families and their communities. LBTI community and individuals also face deep seated stereotypes rooted into the cultural and social norms. Fear and anxiety against sexual and gender diversity remains. The paper draws on the diverse experiences and expertise shared by the participants of the Regional Consultation and discuss entry points for advancing the rights and the well-being of LBTI people that will create changes in the society by reducing inequity based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
